2006 North Trails District
Cub Scout Klondike
The Klondike – Who, What, Where, When and How
All registered Cub Scouts in the North Trails District are invited to participate in the Cub Scout Klondike. The Klondike is a half-day of outdoor winter fun and competition. All Scouts will work in dens and rotate through five activities. Each Scout will receive a patch and have a hot dog lunch. The goal of the Klondike is to have fun. Please help us ensure the competition does not get in the way of having fun.
The cost of the Klondike $5 per Cub Scout for early registration (Adults are free). On-site registrations the day of the event are $6 per Scout. Please sign-up your scouts as a Pack through a designated pack contact (vs. scouts registering individually). Please make checks payable to the Detroit Area Council.
The 2006 North Trails Klondike will be Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Beverly Park. Beverly Park is 2 blocks West of Southfield Road on Beverly Road (13 ½ Mile).

You will need to Bring
One gallon of fresh CLEAN water for every 10 Scouts in your Pack. We heat the water for hot chocolate. Please stress the clean part. In the past someone brought water in an old milk carton that hadn’t been rinsed free of milk. We had to throw away a big kettle of hot water.
One old blanket. For a first aid stretcher relay made out of a blanket and two carrying poles. We will supply the poles, you need to bring the blanket.
Firewood, tinder, and kindling for the Arctic Survival activity. We will supply the matches.
Your Scouts will need to Know.
How to tie a square knot and a bowline.
How to coil and throw a rope 15-20 feet.
How to build a fire and light it with a “strike anywhere” match.
Please practice these things with your Scouts before the day of the Klondike.
General Items
There is some parking available at Beverly Park. Overflow parking is available at the Elementary School ½ block to the East of the park. Please advise your parents not to park on the street, as they will be ticketed.
When you arrive, one adult should be sent to the
registration table. Your Pack will select Dens of no more than 10 Scouts.
These Dens will be assigned to one of five color groups. Each color group will
be comprised of many different Dens from different Packs. If you have a large
Pack and will have more than one Den participating, please mix your older and
younger Scouts together to minimize any age advantage and make the competition a
little fairer.
Activities
Arctic Survival—Build a fire 12” high to burn a string 18”above the ground (snow). You should bring natural, untreated wood and natural untreated tree products such as pine needles, leaves, etc. (Please do not bring paper, wood treated with an accelerant, wolmanized type wood or fire starters). We will supply your Den with two matches and a striker. There is a point deduction for each pair of additional matches provided.
Husky Hustle—The den members will pull a fellow scout on a sled around a set course.
Snow Shoe Relay—Each den member will “lash on” a set of wooden snowshoes to run their leg of this relay race.
Ice Floe Rescue—The den members will tie together rope lengths with square knots. The rope will then be coiled and thrown to a stranded den member 15-20 feet away. The stranded scout will tie a bowline around his waist and will be pulled to safety.
Injured Skier Lift—The den members will make a stretcher out of a blanket and two poles. They will carry the injured skier to a designated place, switch positions and return to the starting point. We will demonstrate how to make this stretcher and give the Scouts some practice.
If time permits, we will have the adults compete in these events too!
Scoring
The Dens in each color group compete against each other at each activity for ribbons.
At the Ice Floe Rescue, there will be an additional point given for each correctly tied square knot and 2 points for the bowline.
At the Arctic Survival activity, one point will be deducted for each pair of additional matches provided.
Dress for the Weather
Please ensure every Scout is properly dressed with winter boots, gloves, hat and coat. Improperly dressed Scouts (e.g. tennis shoes, no gloves or hat) will not be permitted to participate.
